Asustor NAS units were targeted by the Deadbolt ransomware in 2022. Switch off and disconnect an attacked unit straight away.

How we recover it

Every drive is imaged first, repairing any that have failed in the cleanroom. We then rebuild the RAID and the file system in software from the images, check your most important folders with you, and copy everything to a new drive.

Questions

Should I send the whole unit or just the drives?

Usually just the drives, labelled with their bay numbers. Send the unit too for encrypted volumes, Drobo units and anything you aren’t sure about.

It asked me to repair or initialise. What now?

Don’t. Switch it off and call us. Repairs and rebuilds on a failing set of drives are the most common way a recoverable NAS becomes unrecoverable.
