HP laptop data recovery
Every HP laptop from 2015 to 2026: 511 models across the HP 14, 15 and 17, Pavilion, Envy, Spectre, OMEN, Victus, OmniBook, EliteBook, ProBook, ZBook and Chromebook ranges.
The model number is on the sticker underneath the laptop (for example 15s-fq5000na), or on the drive’s label.

HP storage, 2015 to 2026
2015 to 2017: most HP 14, 15, 17 and Pavilion laptops used a removable 2.5-inch hard drive. These fail mechanically (clicking heads, bad sectors) and are recovered in the cleanroom.
2018 to 2020: HP moved to M.2 SSDs, often with a 2.5-inch hard drive alongside in 15-inch and 17-inch models, and Intel Optane memory in some Pavilions.
2021 onwards: almost every HP laptop has an NVMe M.2 SSD. The Stream, Chromebooks and some education models have eMMC soldered to the board.
Windows 11: device encryption or BitLocker is usually on. Personal laptops keep the recovery key in your Microsoft account; work laptops, with your IT team.
