What’s it doing?
| Symptom | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Clicking, ticking or beeping | Failed heads or a stuck motor in a hard drive. Switch it off; this is a cleanroom job. |
| “No bootable device” | The drive or SSD isn’t detected, or Windows is damaged. Often straightforward. |
| Won’t turn on at all | Usually the laptop, not the storage. We remove the drive, or repair the board if it’s soldered. |
| Dropped or spilled on | Switch off, unplug the charger, don’t try it again. |
| BitLocker recovery screen | Find the recovery key at aka.ms/myrecoverykey first. |
| NAS says “volume crashed” | Don’t repair or rebuild. Shut it down and label the drives. |

About the lab
We’re an independent data recovery lab at 80 Willow Walk, London SE1, part of Creative IT, which has recovered data from laptops and drives since the early 2000s. We are not part of HP: we specialise in HP laptops because so many of them reach us, from home Pavilions to company EliteBooks.
Every recovery starts by copying the drive. Electronic and firmware faults are repaired on the bench, failed heads and motors in the cleanroom, and failed SSD controllers with specialist SSD tools. We never work directly on your only copy.
Questions we get asked
Should I try recovery software first?
Only if the drive is healthy and the files were simply deleted. If it clicks, beeps, freezes or isn’t detected, switch it off: software makes a failing drive work harder.
My HP won’t turn on. Are my files lost?
Usually not. Most HP laptops have a removable hard drive or SSD that we recover on its own. Where the storage is soldered to the board, we repair the board.
Do you recover drives that aren’t from HP laptops?
Yes. We recover every make of hard drive, SSD, external drive and NAS: Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba, Samsung, Synology, QNAP, Drobo and the rest.
How much does it cost?
The consultation is free. Deleted files on a healthy hard drive are £99 + VAT; mechanical recoveries start with a £79 cleanroom diagnostic. You get a fixed price before any recovery work.
Is my data kept confidential?
Yes. Only our engineers handle your drive, and our working copy is deleted once you confirm you have everything.
